More reasons why car parking is a squeeze.

The size of cars is to be getting bigger (you may not agree?) and that could be the cause of reduced space between cars. For example:

  • Ford Fiesta (2014) width excluding mirrors is 172.2 cm (67.8 inches)
  • Ford Focus (2014) width excluding mirrors is 182.4 cm (71.8 inches)
  • Audi A6 (2014) width excluding mirrors is 187.4 cm (73.7 inches)
  • Range Rover Sport (2014) width excluding mirrors is 207.4 cm (81.6 inches)

So if the car parking space were to be the standard 2.4m (bigger than many actual car park spaces) the maxiimum distance between two Fiestas would be 4.8m -3.44m, = 1.36m.  That should allow more than enough space to get out. However, this means parking on the far right or left, which might make life difficult for any passengers as they could be hard up against an adkjacent car their side.  So assuming perfect parking right down the centre of the space the gap between the two cars is reduced to 68 cms - still reasonable.  Now make one (or even two) of the cars a Range Rover, allow for crooked parking etc, and how's the gap now?
